About

Welcome to Old School Foto! This site is dedicated to analog photography. I’m old enough to know what it was like to have film as the only option for making photographs. At the time, I only shot the typical point and shoot cameras that used the APS and 110 cartridges. On occasion, I would shoot instant film with a Polaroid camera. Those Kodaks were a lot of fun! Thinking back, I don’t ever remember feeling the need for that instant gratification. Shooting a roll of film and dropping the roll off at the lab was a way of life. I can remember the excitement when everyone gathered around to see those captured moments for the first time. It’s those moments that have been lost in the world of digital photography. Don’t misunderstand me. I still produce plenty of digital work. It’s hard to beat the convenience of digital cameras and their technology has come a long way over the years. However, I have found great pleasure in slowing down. I must say that I discovered this by accident. In the efforts to become more serious with photography and to ramp up the learning curve, I bought my first film camera after 10 years, an Olympus OM1 with a 50mm f1.8 lens. I figured if I could not see the image instantly, I would be forced to put more thought into what I was capturing before hitting the shutter release. This thought process not only accounted for the technical aspects like exposure, composition and lighting, but it also made me more selective on my subjects. I soon discovered that I loved this tactical experience. Slowing down with my film camera taught me so much about photography. The icing on the cake was seeing the scanned images from my very first roll of film. It was mesmerizing! It’s hard to describe, but my images had this timeless look. I loved the colors and the grain added so much character to the photograph. I was hooked! I make fewer photographs now, and I love this craft more than ever! Go figure? I hope you enjoy my images. I would love to hear your comments on my image posts. I will keep the commentary light on this site. If you want to read more about the story behind the shot, check out my main site Shuttering Thru Life by clicking the link at the top of the page. You will find my blog which showcases digital and analog images. Thanks for taking the time to visit Old School Foto!
